PRK – The classic laser eye method: Proven effect

Different types of laser eye techniques can be easily distinguished from one another using new methods such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and ReLEx Smile or LASIK. In the PRK eye laser method, the epithelial layer of the cornea is removed with the help of a laser. This not only corrects corneal curvatures (astigmatism) up to 5 diopters, but also prevents myopia up to +4 diopters to -6 diopters and hyperopia. These values vary from country to country and the final result is also evaluated depending on the patient’s corneal thickness.

The removal of the tissue refracts the rays in the cornea so that they are focused on a focal point on the retina, definitively correcting ametropia. Since the PRK eye laser method has been around since the 1980s, there are now numerous studies confirming the effectiveness and long-term success of this technique.

The procedure of the PRK eye laser method

In the first stage of laser surgery with the PRK technique, the eye is thoroughly examined by our team of doctors in Antalya. This examination aims to determine the thickness and typography of the cornea to identify possible curvatures and disorders, measure pupil and intraocular pressure, and confirm the refractive point correction value in the eye.

After this procedure, the covering skin in the eye is removed with a special surgical blade and the cornea is removed.

The surface of the cornea is removed using an excimer laser until the previously calculated value is reached. In the final stage, a contact lens is inserted into the eye, where it acts as a protection until the epithelium grows back. This usually takes a few days and can sometimes cause pain, as it does after any surgery.

In general, laser eye surgery allows the patient to be discharged from our clinic in Antalya on the same day. In Turkey, this operation is performed as an outpatient treatment. You will be able to see the first results with your own eyes shortly after the procedure and the final result is visible within a few days.

Who is particularly suitable for the PRK method?

If your cornea is not thick enough to be suitable for a conventional LASIK treatment, the PRK (surface treatment) method can be applied. However, as with other laser techniques, with the correction of ametropia you can live without contact lenses and glasses.

What are the requirements for PRK treatment?

Whether it is suitable for PRK eye laser treatment depends on the vision problem. In particular, the following vision problems can be treated using the PRK technique:

Myopia up to about -8 diopters

Far vision up to +3 diopters maximum

Corneal curvature up to about 6 diopters

How is eye laser treatment performed with PRK method?

PRK procedure (photorefractive keratectomy) is not performed at a depth of 0.1 millimeter, but directly under the upper corneal layer.

The cover does not need to be prepared. The epithelium is softened with a specially developed alcohol solution and then gently set aside.

When the treatment area is prepared, the surgeon opens the most accurately calculated cornea and uses the excimer laser to correct the refractive power in the eye. The thickness of the individual cell layer is about forty to fifty micrometers. The treated eye area is then protected by adding a medical contact lens until the epithelium is resealed. This special surface laser treatment requires a longer process than LASIK.

Can I drive after the procedure?

No. It would be better to take a taxi or get support from your friends.

When can I return to work?

It totally depends on what you’re doing. You can start working at the computer again the next day. But normally one to four days of rest is required.

Is there a sick leave or is it necessary to take a leave for PRK treatment?

You may need to take leave for the day of the operation and the next day, because unfortunately your doctor cannot give you a certificate of incapacity for work. Some eye centers / clinics also operate on Thursdays, Fridays and even on weekends.

What is the price of PRK eye laser treatment?

Normally, the cost of laser treatment with the PRK technique is slightly lower than the LASIK treatments for myopia and farsightedness. In addition, treatment fees vary according to the scope of service. In Germany, the cheapest PRK treatments are around 800 Euros per eye. Official health insurance usually does not cover these fees. Private health insurance companies may pay some or all of the treatment costs. You should definitely ask the insurance company beforehand. Some institutions/clinics also offer partial payments.

What risks are there in the PRK method?

In the first days after laser treatment with the PRK method, your eyes may get a little tired. In addition, excessive dryness and itching may occur. On the other hand, you may have problems with vision distance. In some cases, there may be visual disturbances related to the folding or polishing of the epithelium. Your specialist will advise you on this.
